ABOUT

Our specialism is in the rejuvenation and refurbishment of existing buildings, maximising their potential, adding useable area, and enhancing their value for our clients. The analysis and re-use of existing building frames and fabric has long been at the heart of what we do. Understanding and working with the quirks and idiosyncrasies of existing buildings is what makes each building design distinct and characterful.

Culture

Operating out of one studio in Central London ensures cross-project dialogue and cross-pollination of ideas, thus driving creativity and buildability such that, whilst projects have a dedicated team, all schemes benefit from the experience of the entire studio.

These dedicated teams comprise a wealth of knowledge and experience and Trehearne’s USP of senior ownership and high-calibre staff ensures that the identified individuals have the skillset, experience and collaborative approach to successfully engage with the whole design team to encourage their best performance, providing our clients with the confidence of a successful and quality delivery.

It is instilled in the DNA of all at Trehearne to fully understand the brief and scope of every project and to appreciate that it is our client’s building and not our own. It is also vital when working within the built environment to work with the building and local context and not against it. Forcing pre-conceived concepts or ideas on such valuable assets risks both time and money.

History

At Trehearne we draw on our 120+ year history, learning from the past. Trehearne & Norman, as we were originally, was founded in 1900. Its first significant commissions were numerous buildings on the newly conceived Kingsway and Aldwych. Further commercial stone-faced buildings were designed and built in the Central and West End of London in the early part of the 20th Century, before diversifying into London suburb residential mansion blocks in the inter-war years. Post-WWII brought further diversification into educational buildings and commissions in the Middle East and central Europe before focusing on commercial property in the 1980s. As London has evolved so has Trehearne, now a London-specialist architectural studio working on all aspects of the varied portfolio that London has to offer.

Technical Experience

In a world where architectural practices are being polarised into those who design and those who deliver, it is important to us to ensure we maintain the spread of technical skills that encompass both aspects of the profession, and everything in between. The quality and buildability of our production information has not only ensured successful conclusions to projects in both cost and time but has also led to direct appointments with principal contractors as their architect.

Sustainability

We are committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 and have been operating as a carbon neutral organisation since 2022. Refer to our sustainability section here to find out more about our commitment.
