8-10 Hill Street
Client: Berkeley Square Holdings Ltd
Constructed during the first build of the Berkeley Square Estate in the 1740s, these listed houses differ greatly in character. One is tall and contains its original cantilevered stone staircase rising to the second floor, the other is lower and centred around a spectacular staircase rising to the first floor, dating from the 1920s. Both properties had been in various uses and had undergone extensive rebuilding. We were commissioned to refurbish both buildings as high-quality office accommodation. The process involved rationalising various anomalies in their layout, replacing services and installing air conditioning; all in addition to eradicating ungainly alterations and the conservation and restoration of several important architectural features. Not only were these objectives achieved within programme and budget, but the distinct character and qualities of the separate buildings were successfully enhanced.
