Fleet Air Arm Memorial
Client: Fleet Air Arm Memorial Committee
The Fleet Air Arm Memorial celebrates the airborne branch of the Royal Navy, which began life during the First World War as the Royal Naval Air Service. The Memorial stands outside the Ministry of Defence and has a tall and slender shaft which echoes the precarious conditions under which members of the Fleet Air Arm served. Standing on top of this pillar is Jim Butler’s striking winged statue of Daedalus who, unlike his son Icarus, successfully navigated his way across the Aegean Sea.
